He ripped through England’s middle order in the morning session with a burst of three wickets in just seven balls, giving away only one run. By the time he cleaned up Jofra Archer in the second session with a ball that nipped in sharply, he had completed yet another five-wicket haul — his 13th away from home, moving past Kapil Dev’s tally of 12. Yet, there was no fist pump, no roar, no raised ball. Bumrah, true to his calm nature, walked back quietly. It was only when Mohammed Siraj lifted his arm for him that the Lord’s crowd got a chance to acknowledge the feat.
Bumrah’s magic started early. He sent back Ben Stokes with a peach — a delivery that seamed in and hit the top of off stump. He followed that up with wickets of Joe Root and Chris Woakes in quick succession, putting England on the back foot.
