Wimbledon 2025’s second-round action saw the top seeds steadying the ship after a chaotic opening round. World number two Carlos Alcaraz and women’s top seed Aryna Sabalenka both booked their spots in the third round on Wednesday, while rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca continued his breakout campaign. Defending champion Alcaraz ended British wildcard Oliver Tarvet’s fairytale run with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win on Centre Court. The 22-year-old Spaniard, fresh off a five-set battle in his opening round, needed two hours and 17 minutes to dismiss the world number 733. “First of all I have to give big praise to Oliver. In his second match on the tour, I just loved his game to be honest,” Alcaraz said. “The last few months have been a great winning streak. I just try to keep it going. I’m trying to make the most of my time in Wimbledon. Let’s see how far I can go.” Tarvet, a San Diego college player who must forgo most of his Wimbledon earnings to maintain amateur status, earned a standing ovation after pushing the five-time Grand Slam champion.
Earlier in the day, Aryna Sabalenka held off a spirited challenge from Czech Marie Bouzkova to prevail 7-6(4), 6-4 on Centre Court. The top-seeded Belarusian fired 41 winners in a tense 95-minute contest. “Honestly it’s very sad to see so many top players losing in the first round but you better focus on yourself and stay away from the results,” Sabalenka said. “I hope it’s no upsets anymore in this tournament, if you know what I mean.” She now awaits the winner of Emma Raducanu vs Marketa Vondrousova in round three.

    Poll

Who impressed you the most in the second round of Wimbledon 2025?

On Court 12, 18-year-old Joao Fonseca became the youngest Brazilian to reach the Wimbledon third round, beating Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. In just his fourth tour-level grass event, the young star showed remarkable poise, outlasting Brooksby under pressure. With big names falling early, these wins offer a much-needed anchor to a tournament that has already delivered its share of shocks.
