Trump Says U.S. May Support Israel-Iran Ceasefire ‘Depending on Circumstances’
WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump signaled on Friday that the United States could support a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, but only under certain conditions.
When asked by reporters if he would back a ceasefire during ongoing diplomatic efforts, Trump responded:
“I might, depending on the circumstances.”
The conflict, which erupted on June 13 after Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, has intensified regional tensions already heightened by Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza since October 2023.
Trump Dismisses Europe’s Role in Diplomacy
Trump downplayed the effectiveness of European nations in brokering peace, stating:
“Iran doesn’t want to speak to Europe. They want to speak to us. Europe is not going to be able to help in this one.”
While Iranian officials met with European foreign ministers in Geneva to discuss reviving diplomatic efforts over Iran’s nuclear program, the talks ended without any significant breakthroughs.
Trump Avoids Commitment on Ground Troops
When pressed about the possibility of U.S. ground forces being deployed if the conflict escalates, Trump remained cautious:
“I’m not going to talk about ground forces, because the last thing you want to do is ground forces.”
Decision on U.S. Involvement Expected Within Weeks
The White House has indicated that a decision on potential U.S. involvement in the Israel-Iran war could come within the next two weeks. Trump has kept his strategy vague, alternating between calls for diplomacy and hints that the U.S. might align militarily with Israel.
