Traveling this monsoon? Here are some tips for a safe journey

Monsoon season changes the scenery with green plants, flowing rivers, and cool winds. Traveling during this time can be relaxing because it is cooler and less crowded than summer. However, the rain can also cause problems like sudden showers, slippery roads, and delays in travel plans. To enjoy a trip during the monsoon, it’s important to prepare well. Carry rain gear like umbrellas and waterproof bags, check weather updates often, and plan your routes carefully. With good preparation, you can have a safe and enjoyable travel experience even during the rainy season.

8 tips for safe and comfortable travel in monsoon

    1. Check weather forecasts dailyAlways check the weather forecast for your destination at least 3–5 days in advance. Mountainous areas and coastal regions are especially prone to heavy rains, landslides, and waterlogging. Stay updated with weather apps to avoid travel disruptions.2. Pack smart with waterproof essentialsDuring monsoons, waterproof packing is key. Opt for synthetic or quick-dry clothing that doesn’t stay wet for long. Don’t forget to pack a raincoat, poncho, or foldable umbrella. Your footwear should be sturdy, waterproof, and have a good grip; avoid flip-flops at all costs.Store electronics, documents, and money in zip-lock bags or dry pouches. Consider a waterproof backpack cover or dry bag for added protection.3. Protect gadgets & important documentsRain can quickly damage phones, power banks, or cameras. Use waterproof pouches or airtight zip bags to store your gadgets. Keep hard copies of important documents like ID cards, travel insurance, or permits in waterproof sleeves, especially if you’re venturing into remote or offbeat areas.4. Stay healthy & fight mosquitoesMonsoon season increases the risk of waterborne diseases and mosquito-borne illnesses. Drink bottled or filtered water, and avoid consuming tap or roadside water.Carry a basic medical kit with fever, cold, and stomach medications. Use mosquito repellents and wear long-sleeved clothes during evenings and nights. Staying dry also reduces the risk of fungal infections and colds.5. Travel carefully and avoid night drivingMonsoon roads are slippery and often full of potholes. Avoid traveling at night, especially in hilly or poorly lit areas. Plan your journeys during daylight and stick to well-maintained roads or trusted drivers. If self-driving, ensure your vehicle’s brakes, wipers, and tires are in excellent condition. Keep a spare tire and check fuel levels frequently.6. Be cautious with foodDuring monsoons, avoid street food or uncovered meals that may be exposed to dust and flies. Stick to hot, fresh food from clean and trusted restaurants. Avoid uncooked salads, dairy from open sources, and cold drinks with tap water ice.Pack a few healthy snacks like nuts, protein bars, or dry fruits for emergencies or delays7. Keep plans flexibleMonsoons are unpredictable. Flights, trains, and road journeys may get delayed or canceled. Always have a flexible itinerary, buffer days, and refundable bookings where possible.Consider travel insurance that covers weather-related issues. It may help with medical expenses, cancellations, or baggage loss in extreme situations.8. Carry backups & rain-proof extrasPack power banks, extra charging cables, and a flashlight or headlamp in case of power outages. Silica gel packets in your bag can help keep gadgets dry. Also, keep an extra set of clothes and socks for emergencies. To pass the time during delays, carry a book, a journal, or card games. Also read | Top 10 places with extreme climate conditions and harsh living environment
