As India embarks on a new chapter in Test cricket under Shubman Gill’s captaincy, former head coach Ravi Shastri has offered some thoughtful advice to the young leader. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri emphasised the importance of patience and composure for Gill as he takes on the demanding role of leading India in a five-Test series in England. “I think, take your time,” Shastri said, addressing the 25-year-old skipper. “It’s not going to be easy. He’s been asked to do a tough job – that is to captain India on a tour of England.” With seasoned players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli having recently retired from Test cricket, Gill now leads a relatively young Indian squad. The upcoming series, starting at Headingley, also marks India’s first challenge in the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship cycle. Though Gill’s Test record stands at 1,893 runs at an average of 35.05 in 32 matches, Shastri remains hopeful about his potential. “It’s never easy,” he said, “but I think he will learn from this exposure.”
Reflecting on Gill’s leadership in the IPL 2025 with the Gujarat Titans, Shastri praised his calm and steady approach despite the team’s exit in the Eliminator. “What I saw of him in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, he seemed very composed and calm. He’s got a good temperament,” said the former India coach. Gill’s recent form in white-ball cricket has been encouraging, including a half-century in India’s recent intra-squad match in Beckenham, signaling his readiness for the tough challenges ahead. The Test series in England, known for testing even the most experienced players, will be a true examination of his technique and temperament.
