Stop! Never cook these 9 foods in your air fryer

Air fryers have revolutionised the way we cook, offering a healthier alternative to deep-frying, and a convenient way to cook a variety of dishes. But, like any kitchen appliance, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. While it’s perfect for making crispy fries, chicken wings, and roasted vegetables, there are some foods that are not supposed to be cooked in the air fryer. Some can damage the appliance, while others may not cook evenly or safely.Cooking in an air fryer is all about finding the right temperature, cooking time, and food preparation to achieve perfect results. By understanding what to cook and what to avoid, you can get the most out of this kitchen appliance.

Avoid cooking these foods in your air fryer

    1. Wet battered foods

    Wet battered food

Wet battered foods like tempura or beer-battered fish don’t fare well in air fryers. The wet batter can drip through the basket, creating a mess and potentially causing fire. Instead, opt for dry-coated foods or use a light dusting of seasonings. 2. Leafy greens

    Leafy greens

Leafy greens like spinach, kale, or lettuce can burn easily in an air fryer due to their delicate nature. They require quick cooking times and precise temperature control. For best results, saute or steam leafy greens instead. 3. Popcorn

    Popcorn

Air fryers aren’t designed for popcorn kernels. The kernels can explode and get stuck in the appliance’s vents, causing damage or creating a mess. It is not preferable to cook popcorn in air fryers. 4. Cheese

    Cheese

Cheese can melt and stick to the air fryer basket, creating a difficult cleaning task. It can also become overly crisp or burnt if not monitored closely. For melted cheese dishes, consider using a different cooking method. 5. Raw grains

    Raw grains

Raw grains like rice or quinoa require specific cooking methods and liquid ratios to cook properly. Air fryers aren’t ideal for cooking grains, as they can cook unevenly or remain undercooked. 6. Breaded and frozen foods with high water content

    Frozen food

Breaded and frozen foods with high water content, such as certain frozen vegetables or fish sticks, can release excess moisture during cooking. This can lead to steaming instead of browning, affecting the final texture and taste. 7. Large quantities of food: Overcrowding the air fryer basket can lead to uneven cooking and reduced air circulation. Cook food in batches if necessary, to ensure each piece has enough room to cook properly. 8. Delicate fish: Delicate fish fillets can break apart or become overcooked in an air fryer. The high heat and air circulation can cause the fish to dry out or lose its tender texture. For delicate fish, consider baking or poaching instead. 9. Foods with high fat content: Foods with high fat content, like bacon or sausages, can release excess grease during cooking. This can lead to smoke, splatters, or even fires if not monitored closely. Keep an eye on fatty foods and adjust cooking times as needed. Also read | Can ghee coffee really help with weight loss? Know its benefits and side effects
