NEW DELHI: India registered their biggest-ever away Test victory by runs on Sunday, hammering England by 336 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston. The emphatic win not only helped India level the five-match series 1-1 but also ended their long wait for a Test victory at the iconic Birmingham venue.India’s thumping 336-run win over England at Edgbaston in 2025 is now their biggest away Test victory by runs, topping a list of dominant performances overseas. The previous best was a 318-run hammering of West Indies in North Sound in 2016, followed by a 304-run win over Sri Lanka in Galle (2017). The 295-run triumph in Perth against Australia in 2024 also finds its place among India’s finest, as does the 279-run win at Leeds in 1986.India’s biggest away Test wins by runs:

    Margin Opponent Venue Year
    336 runs England Birmingham 2025
318 runs West Indies North Sound 2016
304 runs Sri Lanka Galle 2017
    295 runs Australia Perth 2024
    279 runs England Leeds 1986

Resuming Day 5 at 72/3 and facing a record target of 608, England crumbled under sustained pressure from the Indian bowling attack. They were reduced to 153/6 by lunch and eventually bowled out for 271 in the second session. The star of the day was Akash Deep, who produced a sensational spell of fast bowling to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests, finishing with figures of 6/99. The 27-year-old struck twice in a rain-delayed morning session before returning after lunch to remove Jamie Smith (88) — England’s lone fighter — and then sealed the match by dismissing Brydon Carse (38).

India’s bowlers, led by Akash Deep and ably supported by Mohammed Siraj and Washington Sundar, ensured England never got close to making a contest of the final day. The win also marked Shubman Gill’s first Test victory as captain, making it a landmark occasion for the young skipper. The series now shifts to London for the third Test, which begins on July 10.
