Superstar Rajinikanth is gearing up for one of his most anticipated releases, Coolie, directed by the dynamic Lokesh Kanagaraj. Ever since the project was announced, the film has generated tremendous excitement, with expectations soaring not just in Tamil Nadu but across the globe with Indians. Reports suggest that the overseas distribution rights for Coolie are being negotiated for a massive figure crossing Rs 80 crore, underscoring Rajinikanth’s enduring global appeal.The Tamil superstar, who has long been a pan-India icon, finds his films performing exceptionally well in Tamil and Telugu-speaking regions. With the growing phenomenon of multi-language releases in Indian cinema — popularized by Pushpa, KGF, and Baahubali — Coolie too is slated for a multi-language release. However, unlike the Kannada and Telugu blockbusters which have made inroads into the Hindi belt, Tamil films, particularly Rajinikanth’s, have traditionally enjoyed a much stronger pull in the Telugu states than in North India.A glance at Rajinikanth’s recent box office performances illustrates this trend vividly. His last release, Vettaiyan, clocked a modest Rs 4.68 crore in Hindi-speaking territories but earned an impressive Rs 17.92 crore from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The blockbuster Jailer further amplified this divide, collecting Rs 7.24 crore in Hindi while storming past Rs 68.06 crore in the Telugu states. Earlier, Annatthe had no Hindi release and garnered Rs 6.1 crore in Telugu, while Darbar did Rs 3.72 crore in Hindi and Rs 13.47 crore in Telugu markets.This consistent preference for Rajinikanth’s films in Telugu-speaking regions has made Andhra Pradesh and Telangana lucrative territories for the actor’s releases. Industry insiders reveal that the distribution rights for Coolie in these markets are currently being considered in the range of Rs 50 to Rs 80 crore — a staggering figure that rivals the numbers typically commanded by homegrown Telugu superstars.The major chunk of film’s collection would be coming from Tamil Nadu. While Tamil cinema’s performance in the Hindi belt has seen occasional spikes, Rajinikanth’s consistent draw in the Telugu states highlights the deep-rooted cultural and cinematic connect he shares with audiences there.
