R-Truth Recalls How Road Dogg Saved His Wrestling Career Before WWE Debut
Former WWE Superstar R-Truth, also known as Ron Killings, has opened up about a pivotal moment in his early wrestling career and how Road Dogg from D-Generation X (DX) played a crucial role in stopping him from quitting the industry altogether.
In a heartfelt interview on “Insight with Chris Van Vliet”, R-Truth shared that during his time in Memphis Championship Wrestling (MCW), he nearly walked away from pro wrestling. After signing with WWE, R-Truth was assigned to MCW to sharpen his skills, with the promise that he would be called up to WWE within six months. However, personal issues and a lack of career progress led to mounting frustration.
“I was in Memphis training hard. Six months went by, then seven, and still nothing happened. I was facing problems at home and started feeling like a failure,” said R-Truth. “I was ready to quit. I didn’t know what I was going to do next. My contract was ending, and I had my last show.”
That’s when fate intervened. Road Dogg and his wife were vacationing in Memphis and happened to attend one of the TV tapings. At that show, R-Truth (then performing under another ring name) dropped the title to Jerry Lawler. Road Dogg noticed his in-ring performance and—more importantly—his rapping skills.
“After the match, Road Dogg asked me, ‘Was that you rapping?’ I said, ‘Yeah,’ and he said, ‘I want you to be my tag team partner.’ I was shocked. This was Road Dogg, from DX. I told him, ‘Man, I’m about to quit.’ But he looked at me and said, ‘You made it here. Don’t give up now.’”
According to R-Truth, Road Dogg encouraged him to keep going for three more months and promised to help bring him into WWE. True to his word, just two months later, WWE called—and the rest is history. R-Truth would debut in WWE under the ring name K-Kwik, beginning what would become a legendary and entertaining career in sports entertainment.
