Phoenix Suns Hire Jordan Ott as New Head Coach After Extensive Search
The Phoenix Suns have officially hired Jordan Ott as their new head coach, selecting him from a competitive pool of over 15 candidates. The decision, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, marks a pivotal step as the franchise looks to reset following a disappointing 2024-25 NBA season.
Jordan Ott Beats Out Top Coaching Candidates
Ott edged out several high-profile contenders for the Suns’ top job, including fellow former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Johnnie Bryant. The team also interviewed other notable assistant coaches such as:
Chris Quinn (Miami Heat)
Dave Bliss (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Sean Sweeney (Dallas Mavericks)
According to reports, Suns star Devin Booker was actively involved in the hiring process and gave his approval for Ott’s appointment — a key endorsement as the team aims to rebuild its culture and on-court performance.
Jordan Ott’s Coaching Journey
Ott brings a wealth of experience to Phoenix. He began his NBA coaching career with the Atlanta Hawks as a video coordinator (2013–2016) before moving into an assistant coaching role with the Brooklyn Nets, where he worked under Kenny Atkinson, Steve Nash, and Jacque Vaughn.
In 2022, Ott joined Darvin Ham’s staff with the Los Angeles Lakers and later reunited with Atkinson in Cleveland. This past season, Ott played a crucial role in the Cavaliers’ Eastern Conference-topping 64-18 campaign.
Suns Face Pressure After Disappointing Season
The Suns are coming off a disastrous 2024-25 season, finishing 34-46 and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020 — despite boasting the NBA’s most expensive roster, featuring Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal.
Ott becomes the Suns’ fourth head coach in four years, highlighting the instability that has plagued the franchise. His hiring also comes as Brian Gregory steps into his first full season as general manager, following the firing of Mike Budenholzer in April. In his introductory press conference, Gregory vowed to reshape the team’s identity and hire a coach who fits the long-term vision.
What’s Next for the Phoenix Suns?
With roster shakeups likely — including rumors of Kevin Durant’s potential departure — the Suns are entering a new era under Ott and Gregory. The franchise hopes this fresh leadership duo can bring much-needed consistency and return Phoenix to playoff contention.
