3 Are Arrested in Russia-Linked Sabotage Plot, Germany Says

0

Three Ukrainian men have been arrested in Germany and Switzerland for planning acts of sabotage against infrastructure in Europe on behalf of Russia, the German authorities said Wednesday.

The federal prosecutor’s office in Berlin said it was investigating the three men, who were arrested over the past five days, for a plan to send incendiary and explosive devices in parcels to addresses in Ukraine. None have been charged.

The aim, the prosecutor said in a statement, appeared to be part of a plot to damage logistical infrastructure for commercial freight. The statement did not provide further details about possible targets.

One of the men, identified only as Vladyslav T. in accordance with Germany’s strict privacy rules, posted two test packages in Cologne containing GPS transmitters in order to trace the route of the packages to Ukraine, the prosecutor said.

Another man, Yevhen B., who was arrested Tuesday in Switzerland and will be extradited to Germany, directed that action, the prosecutor said. A third man, Daniil B., delivered the GPS transmitters and other items for the test packages, it said.

Authorities are treating the men as foreign agents, and believe they had been directed by Russian state actors, the prosecutor said.

Last year, a package exploded at a DHL hub at the airport in Leipzig, in what Western intelligence officials believe was a test run for a plot coordinated by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU. The fire in Leipzig was followed by a similar fire at a DHL warehouse in Birmingham, England, and at a transport company near Warsaw.

A Romanian national has since been detained by British police in connection with those fires.

Poland has also accused Russia of being behind a fire that wiped out 1,400 small businesses when a shopping mall in Warsaw was almost completely destroyed in May of last year. On Sunday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland accused Russia of being behind the blaze.

“We now know for sure that the great fire of the Marywilska shopping center in Warsaw was caused by arson ordered by the Russian special services,” he wrote on X.

The arrests come after several official warnings that Germany has become the target of Russian hybrid attacks. Last year, the authorities charged three Russian-German dual citizens who they believe were hired to carry out acts of sabotage on industrial and military sites. The military has also reported foreign drones flying over training sites where Ukrainian soldiers are being trained.

The issue of Russian sabotage in Germany even made it into Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s inaugural speech to lawmakers on Wednesday.

“Look at the espionage and sabotage and the systematic disinformation of our population — this is overwhelmingly the work of the Russian government and its helpers, including here,” he said.

Virginia GOP embraced a diverse ticket in this year’s elections. Then things got complicated

RICHMOND, Va. — Republicans engaged in scrubbing the federal government of diversity, equity and inclusion programs are fielding a historically diverse ticket in Virginia in one of the only states holding elections this year.

Those two things aren’t inherently incompatible, and some experts say nominating diverse candidates could reinforce the argument that officeholders should be chosen on merit. But in the shadow of Washington, where President Donald Trump’s push to stamp out DEI programs has caused turmoil at colleges, businesses and throughout the federal government, things have gotten complicated.

Conservative stalwart John Reid, a talk-radio host whose father was a Virginia delegate, is the first openly gay man to be a statewide nominee in Virginia. He was sailing toward the general election as the GOP’s choice for lieutenant governor when Republican opposition research linked him to a blog featuring photographs of naked men, first reported by The Richmonder, an online news site.

In late April, days after the ticket solidified, Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin called Reid and asked him to drop out after learning about the Tumblr account with a username matching the candidate’s Instagram handle.

Reid said the account was a fabrication and made clear he was staying in the race. Days later, he accused Youngkin’s team of extortion.

“I’m really angry to be betrayed by people I personally supported, and I’m really saddened for what is happening to our party right now,” Reid said the following week.

Youngkin’s effort to oust Reid backfired. Republicans rallied to the nominee’s side, or at least offered tepid support.

Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, a Jamaican migrant and Marine veteran vying to be the state’s first female governor, released a statement days after the news broke, saying it was “his race, and his decision alone to move forward.”

Some Republicans were more forceful, creating merchandise saying “In John Reid We Trust.” Former Republican Gov. Jim Gilmore told a group of reporters, “I still endorse John, and I’m standing by my endorsement.”

Others were quick to back Youngkin. The conservative lobbying group Family Foundation Action wrote in a statement that voters want “elected officials who represent their values.” On Monday, a Virginia Republican who failed to qualify for the primary for lieutenant governor launched a write-in campaign for the position.

Former Republican Rep. Bob Good said Reid should drop out. The controversy comes five years after Good ousted former GOP Rep. Denver Riggleman, who lost his party’s nomination for reelection in a conservative district after officiating a same-sex wedding.

“If we can’t get over how other people live, I think the Republican Party is dead in Virginia,” Riggleman said at the time.

Youngkin, widely viewed as a possible presidential candidate in 2028, backed off within a week, describing his conversation with the candidate as a distraction from the election ahead.

In the meantime, a get-together for the candidates with the tagline “Ever Forward,” which had been scheduled before Youngkin phoned Reid but suddenly was loaded with new meaning, had been canceled.

Reid rebooked the rally at the same time and place. But instead of celebrating the ticket, he celebrated his own candidacy as other top-of-the-ticket Republicans stayed away.

In a party that nominated a president who said at his inauguration that he would not allow the government to “socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life,” experts say, Virginia’s candidates were already in a precarious position.

“They’re not really able to capitalize on it as an advantage, because it works against too much of what else the rhetoric is saying,” said political analyst Geoff Kabaservice, vice president of political studies at the center-right Niskanen Center.

Still, GOP candidates have engaged in those conversations. Reid said in a statement when he launched his campaign that he was not a diversity hire. In a March Facebook post, he wrote: “Diversity itself is not a strength. Common values and shared goals amongst diverse people is a strength.”

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, seeking reelection as the first Latino man and first-generation Cuban American to hold statewide office, has supported dismantling DEI programs.

And Earle-Sears connected DEI to slavery in a fundraising email first reported by Politico.

David Hopkins, a Boston College professor who studies voting behavior, said the strategy of distancing themselves from DEI, regardless of whether the idea is popular, made sense.

“There’s a political logic that says if you’re going to run against DEI programs and Democrats are saying: ‘Oh, you’re just playing to racism. You’re playing to prejudice,’ that actually nominating diverse candidates … can be an especially powerful way to handle the issue.”

Polls have shown growing frustration with Trump’s administration. Americans are nearly twice as likely to say Trump has mostly focused on the wrong priorities as the right ones, according to a survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Another recent poll indicates that some disagree with his attacks on DEI, finding that people are more likely to support than oppose university services to help underrepresented students and courses that teach about racism.

The election was already going to be a challenge for Republicans in Virginia, which carries out statewide elections in the year following a presidential election. The commonwealth remains one of a dwindling number willing to elect leaders from both parties statewide. Its voters have often voted for a governor from the party opposite of the one in the Oval Office.

At the event formerly known as “Ever Forward,” now a Reid campaign rally, hundreds of supporters carrying John Reid posters bustled into Atlas 42, an event space in the suburban county outside Richmond that his father represented for decades.

“This is something they would do in the ‘50s or ’60s,” Republican Nancy Akers said as she lined up to hear Reid speak. “I thought we were away from that by now. His private life is his private life.”

Carey Allen, a Republican from Chester, Virginia, also expressed frustration: “Number one, I don’t believe the account was his. Number two, I don’t think it’s relevant.”

Earle-Sears, across town, threw the first pitch at a minor league baseball game. Miyares did not attend, either. Gilmore was with Reid, working the crowd.

Still, as constituents crowded around Reid, the other candidates’ absence did not seem to weigh on them. One woman walked up to Reid and gave him a bear hug. As they embraced, she said, “I love you.”

Another man shook Reid’s hand and murmured in his ear, “This is really powerful.”

An older gentleman walked up to Reid and gently shook his hand, handing him an envelope. Reid thanked him before tucking the envelope into his inside pocket.

When Reid first took the stage, the crowd roared and chanted his name.

“I’d say that this is a pretty big, good distraction!” he exclaimed.

Cassie Testimony Details Diddy Hotel Assault (Updating Live)

Cassie is continuing her testimony in the trial of her ex-boyfriend Sean “Diddy” Combs on Wednesday, May 14, answering questions from the prosecution at the Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Courthouse in New York City. Diddy was arrested in September 2024 and charged with sex trafficking, racketeering conspiracy and transportation to engage in prostitution. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and has denied all of the allegations against him.

The singer, 38, began on Wednesday by discussing the surveillance video from 2016 that showed Diddy, now 55, physically assaulting her at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles. Cassie (full name Casandra Ventura) recalled her then-boyfriend throwing a vase with flowers in it at her.

“I didn’t get hit. I remember it hitting the wall,” she told Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Johnson. “He was yelling at me and threw it at me.”

The video, which was published in an edited form by CNN last year, has no audio, so Cassie attempted to remember what Diddy was saying to her. She claimed he was telling her that she “couldn’t” leave him as she was trying to exit the hotel.

Cassie took the stand New York City’s Daniel Patrick Moynihan U.S. Courthouse during ex-boyfriend Sean “Diddy” Combs’ trial, testifying about their relationship and her allegations against him. The singer, 38, began her testimony on Tuesday, May 13, by describing her relationship with Diddy, 55, claiming that it was marked by violence. “There were violent arguments […]

The prosecution then displayed photos of Cassie in the aftermath of the assault, which showed her with a swollen lip. She told the court that she had a black eye under her sunglasses.

After the assault, Cassie claimed, Diddy tried to contact her, but she texted him, “Please stay far away from me.”

When she returned home, a friend called the police and Cassie spoke to them about the incident, but she testified that she didn’t want to tell them who assaulted her. When asked by Johnson whether she wanted to “protect” Diddy, Cassie replied, “Yeah, of course.”

Cassie then alleged that Diddy came to her apartment too, at which point she heard “chaos outside of the door” including “banging, kicking [and] yelling.” She said she went to the home of D-Roc, one of Diddy’s security guards, shortly after the assault “to feel safe.”

The first day of testimony in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ongoing sex crimes trial kicked off with a hotel security guard called by prosecutors. In a New York City courtroom, Israel Florez — a former security guard at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles — recalled an incident where the rapper assaulted Cassie Ventura on March […]

The prosecution also showed a photo of Cassie and Diddy at an afterparty following the premiere of her movie The Perfect Match, which took place two days after the assault. She pointed out a bruise on her right shin.

After discussing the assault, Cassie began answering questions about her role in Diddy’s freak offs, alleging she was often responsible for hiring male escorts who would participate in the events. “That was just my job, really,” she said. “It was expected of me.”

Since Diddy’s arrest last year, his legal team has repeatedly denied the allegations against him.

“We are disappointed with the decision to pursue what we believe is an unjust prosecution of Mr. Combs by the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Diddy’s attorney Marc Agnifilo said in a statement in September 2024. “He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal. To his credit Mr. Combs has been nothing but cooperative with this investigation and he voluntarily relocated to New York last week in anticipation of these charges. Please reserve your judgment until you have all the facts. These are the acts of an innocent man with nothing to hide, and he looks forward to clearing his name in court.”

While Cassie (real name Cassandra Ventura) has since married Alex Fine and become a mother, her relationship with Diddy hasn’t stopped making headlines. The New York Times reported in November 2023 […]

Diddy’s arrest came nearly one year after Cassie filed a lawsuit against him accusing him of sexual and physical abuse throughout their relationship, which lasted off and on from 2007 to 2018. The mogul denied her claims in a statement shared by his attorney.

“Mr. Combs vehemently denies these offensive and outrageous allegations,” Diddy’s lawyer Ben Brafman said at the time.

One day after the suit was filed, Diddy and Cassie settled out of court. In May 2024, CNN published the hotel surveillance video of Diddy kicking and grabbing Cassie in 2016. He later apologized for his actions in a video shared via Instagram.

Jenna Ortega Rocks One of Carrie Bradshaw’s Most Famous Looks

0

Jenna Ortega is pulling from the archives.

The Wednesday star arrived at the Hurry Up Tomorrow world premiere in New York on Tuesday, May 13, in a vintage Christian Dior design, which was famously worn by one of New York City’s finest: Sex and the City‘s Carrie Bradshaw.

Ortega, 22, who became an ambassador for the fashion house in 2023, arrived in a memorable newspaper print dress. The famed design debuted at the Christian Dior Fall/Winter 2000 show at Paris Fashion Week, according to L’Officiel USA. At the time, John Galliano was the creative director of Dior.

Notably, there were two versions of the dress. One is a longer gown that appeared on the Paris Fashion Week runway. The second is the one familiar to audiences. It is a form-fitting midi-length dress that Carrie wore — and now Ortega is wearing.

Ortega opted to accessorize differently from the SATC character. The actress wore gold open-toe heel sandals and a gold pendant necklace that matched the dress’ gold hardware.

The Scream star’s makeup also coordinated with the ensemble’s colors, and she had a deep smoky eye that was topped off with gold eye shadow. Again, unlike Carrie, Ortega wore her black hair in a sleek straight blowout, while Carrie’s hair was styled in her blonde wavy hairdo.

Carrie wore the dress in season 3, episode 17, “What Goes Around Comes Around,” which premiered in October 2000. She paired the dress with her signature gold nameplate necklace. Parker’s character resurrected the dress years later and rewore it in 2010’s Sex and the City 2. In the feature film, she wears the iconic dress with Christian Louboutin Bridget Strass peep-toe black booties and a white feather clutch.

In the years since Carrie wore it on the streets of New York, a couple of celebrity models have been photographed wearing dresses that seem to be inspired by the look.

In April 2023, Emily Ratajkowski sported Miaou’s “Karina” dress. The halterneck dress gave the effect of newspaper print, but it was actually printed with black and white “Signal Ahead” street signs, per Cosmopolitan

In July 2023, Ashley Graham wore a Clio Peppiatt Vic minidress, which included a beaded newspaper print in blue, silver and black, as well as Swarovski additions along the neckline, perWomen’s Wear Daily.

7-day severe weather threat kicks off Wednesday with Plains, Midwest on alert first

CHICAGO – There’s been an eerie lull in extreme weather across the U.S. recently, but all that is about to change as the FOX Forecast Center monitors a seven-day stretch of severe weather that kicks off on Wednesday.

The central and northern Plains, as well as portions of the Upper Midwest, will see storms fire up first on Wednesday before threat zones shift and expand to include more areas of the nation through the workweek and weekend, as well as into the start of next week.

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

The FOX Forecast Center said that confidence is continuing to grow around a more active severe weather pattern starting Wednesday as an upper-level disturbance emerges from the West and moves into the central U.S.

The disturbance will then help to form a vigorous area of low pressure at the surface across the central and northern Plains, setting the stage for storms to fire up across portions of the Midwest, including cities like Chicago and Milwaukee, by late Thursday and into Thursday night.

The FOX Forecast Center said the strongest instability and storm energy on Wednesday will be found from the Kansas-Nebraska border northward into the Dakotas.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed about 1.3 million people in a Level 2 threat on its 5-point severe thunderstorm risk scale.

This includes cities such as Grand Island and Kearney in Nebraska, Sioux City in Iowa, Sioux Falls in South Dakota and Bismarck in North Dakota.

Thunderstorms that develop on Wednesday will be capable of producing very large hail (potentially larger than 2 inches), damaging wind gusts and some tornadoes.

Severe storm threat grows in Chicago, Milwaukee

Forecasters have been monitoring the severe weather threat in the Midwest since the weekend, and that continues to grow.

More than 16 million people in cities like Chicago and Naperville in Illinois, Milwaukee and Madison in Wisconsin and Grand Rapids in Michigan have been placed in a Level 3 out of 5 threat on Thursday.

Cities like Detroit, Indianapolis, Minneapolis and Cincinnati are currently under a Level 2 out of 5 threat.

The FOX Forecast Center said that as the system continues to intensify, moisture from the Gulf will surge north and combine with high instability and wind shear – the change in wind speed and direction with height – to support the potentially volatile severe storm environment.

(FOX Weather)

An early-morning “cap” – essentially an atmospheric lid – will erode quickly by Thursday afternoon, allowing severe storms to develop in central and southern Minnesota.

Storms will be capable of producing very large hail and damaging wind gusts. There may also be some wind shear that could produce an early tornado threat.

Ahead of that line, supercell thunderstorms could develop where wind shear is highest. The FOX Forecast Center said there is the potential to see long-lived supercell thunderstorms in portions of Illinois, northern Indiana, southwestern Wisconsin and southwestern Michigan.

Those areas, forecasters said, are where there could be a possibly significant tornado threat.

This graphic shows the severe weather threat on Friday, May 16, 2025.
(FOX Weather)

The severe weather threat will continue as we head toward the end of the workweek, with more than 18 million people in cities like St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Memphis and Nashville in Tennessee in a Level 2 out of 5 risk of severe weather.

The main threats from thunderstorms that develop will be large hail and damaging wind gusts, but tornadoes will also be possible.

Long-range models show severe weather threat extending into next week

As we get into the upcoming weekend, computer forecast models show that the threat of severe weather could extend into at least the start of next week.

The FOX Forecast Center said an area of low pressure is expected to form near the Rockies by early Sunday. Storm energy will move into the southern Plains as a warm front lifts northward.

Storms are then expected to fire up east of the dryline – a boundary separating a humid air mass from a much drier air mass – by late Sunday.

By Monday, a more widespread severe weather threat is expected as the system moves deeper into the Plains, with all severe weather hazards possible.

Then, by Tuesday, the FOX Forecast Center said the threat of severe weather could push eastward into the Ohio Valley. However, that’s still several days away, and details will be ironed out as more information is learned.
