Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King enters 2026 Republican race for US Senate

ATLANTA — Georgia Insurance Commissioner John King on Monday became the second major Republican to enter the 2026 race to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen Jon Ossoff, saying “President Trump needs reinforcements and Georgia needs a new senator.”

King jumped in after U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene announced Friday that she would not seek the Republican nomination for Senate, and a week after King’s political patron, Gov. Brian Kemp, made the same decision.

U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, a Republican who represents a coastal Georgia district, announced his campaign for the Senate after Kemp announced he wasn’t running.

Five other GOP officeholders have acknowledged interest to The Associated Press, signaling what could be a wide-open Republican contest. They include two other Republicans in Congress, Mike Collins and Rich McCormick. Also considering the race are Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, state Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper and state Sen. Greg Dolezal.

King, 61, emphasized his biography in his announcement, including being born in Mexico, his rise to major general in the Georgia National Guard and his work in law enforcement as an Atlanta police officer and Doraville police chief.

“I’ve never shied away from a fight, but what truly scares me today is having Jon Ossoff for six more years. President Trump got sent to Washington, D.C., to solve some very big problems,” King said in an announcement video. “He needs help and I’m asking for your support to go help President Trump and solve these incredibly big problems.”

King said Monday that he had been stabbed and shot while serving as an Atlanta police officer. He also was a member of the Atlanta Police Department’s Red Dog unit, an anti-crime task force that drew widespread criticism for its aggressive tactics.

It was King’s experience in the National Guard that brought him to Kemp’s attention. King had never held elective office and had lost out on his application to be Kemp’s National Guard chief when Kemp was faced with filling a vacancy in the insurance commissioner’s office after Jim Beck was indicted on federal criminal charges and suspended in 2019. Kemp chose King, saying he would “restore trust” in the office after not only Beck but also his predecessor John Oxendine faced criminal charges.

King held the post on an interim basis for years, and Kemp appointed him permanently after Beck was convicted in 2022. Later that year, King became the first Hispanic person to be elected to a statewide post in Georgia.

Kemp has made a number of appointments to diversify what has traditionally been an overwhelmingly white and male group of Republican officeholders. Fluent in Spanish, King often delivered messages on behalf of Kemp in that language during the pandemic, and released announcement videos Monday in both English and Spanish.

King was also a key messenger during Kemp’s successful push to limit civil lawsuit verdicts and has become a frequent speaker at political events the last two years. But King, like a number of other Senate hopefuls, remains little-known by the broader electorate.

He also needs to prove that he can raise the large amounts of money needed for a Senate campaign. He raised $1 million during his 2022 reelection campaign, enough for a low-profile statewide office but not for a competitive Republican primary. Overall, the 2026 Senate race is likely to cost hundreds of millions. Ossoff raised more than $11 million just in the first three months of 2025.

India Squad for England Tour Announcement Live Updates: ‘Karun Nair deserves to come back into the Indian team’

India Squad for England Tour Announcement Live Updates: While the cricketing world focuses on the upcoming resumption of IPL 2025, significant developments are also taking place in India’s red-ball cricket setup.

Behind the scenes, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is moving swiftly to finalise plans for the India A vs England Lions series, a key component of India’s long-term Test strategy. According to reports, the India A squad has already been selected, with only minor adjustments pending. The official announcement is expected on May 15.

The selection meeting reportedly occurred on May 6 in Mumbai, just a day before Rohit Sharma made headlines by retiring from Test cricket. The series is scheduled for late May through mid-June and includes two games against the England Lions (May 30–June 2 and June 6–9), followed by a match against the senior Indian team (June 13–16). Abhimanyu Easwaran is the frontrunner to lead the squad.

Selectors faced challenges in finalising the team due to the IPL’s postponement. They’ve been advised to initially include non-IPL players or those whose teams are likely to be out of playoff contention. Players like Baba Indrajith, Karun Nair, Akash Deep, and Tanush Kotian are among those in the mix. Dhruv Jurel and Nitish Reddy are expected to start with India A before being promoted to the senior squad.

Notably, Shardul Thakur has already been earmarked for the senior team. However, uncertainty surrounds the inclusion of Ishan Kishan due to the presence of Rishabh Pant and Jurel. Andhra’s Ricky Bhui, despite topping the Ranji charts, is reportedly not in contention.

Shreyas Iyer is also not a guaranteed pick, having fallen out of favour after not playing a Test for over 15 months. His inclusion might hinge on whether Virat Kohli agrees to play, which could alter the balance.

The selectors are also assessing swing bowlers for English conditions. Mukesh Kumar, known for his ability to move the ball, is under consideration depending on his IPL team’s progress. Yash Dayal is being viewed as a stronger left-arm option than Khaleel Ahmed.

Sarfaraz Khan’s selection remains uncertain due to a recent injury; standard BCCI policy requires match fitness through domestic games, but an exception might be made in his case.

Overall, the India A tour is shaping up to be a critical testbed for India’s next generation of red-ball talent.

Walmart (WMT) Q1 2026 earnings

Walmart will report its quarterly earnings before the bell on Thursday, as investors and economists gauge the strength of the U.S. consumer and the impact of higher tariffs on the retail industry.

Here’s what Wall Street is expecting for the fiscal first quarter, according to a survey of analysts by LSEG:

  • Earnings per share: 58 cents
  • Revenue: $165.88 billion

Walmart has advantages that could help it weather an uncertain economy. As the nation’s largest grocer, it sells food and necessities that drive steadier store and website traffic.

And as a well-known value player, it can use lower prices to attract even middle- and upper-income customers who want to pay less. Already, Walmart has attracted wealthier shoppers with faster deliveries, store remodels and a wider assortment of brands.

Plus, the discounter has boosted profits by looking beyond retail and grown newer businesses, including advertising, delivery and it subscription-based membership program Walmart+.

At an investor day last month, Walmart stuck by its first-quarter sales outlook of 3% to 4% growth. Yet it widened the operating income guidance and did not provide a new range, citing uncertainty about the impact of tariffs on profits.

At the time, Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said the big-box retailer had seen “a little more sales volatility week to week and frankly, day to day.” He said the company expected April to be its strongest month of the quarter because of the Easter holiday.

About a third of what Walmart sells in the U.S. comes from other parts of the world, with China and Mexico as the “most significant” countries for imports, Rainey said in April.

Since Walmart’s investor day remarks, the Trump administration has increased tariffs on goods from China and then later announced it would slash those rates for 90 days. On Monday, President Donald Trump announced the agreement with China to temporarily reduce duties to 30%, down from 145%. Beijing said it will lower tariffs on U.S. goods to 10% from 125%.

Simeon Gutman, retail analyst at Morgan Stanley, said he expects Walmart and other retailers to capitalize on the 90-day pause by importing what they need for the crucial back-to-school and holiday seasons.

As a retail giant and low-cost operator, Walmart is in “an enviable position,” he said. The company’s scale allows for more efficient operations, more leverage in negotiations with vendors and the ability to keep prices low — even at a time when consumers are selective about spending and tariff levels rise and fall.

“Anytime these shocks occur to the system, how can they not be the best off?” Gutman said.

But, he added, “at a moment that the consumer is more tentative, it’s critical for this business to show they’re still taking share.”

As of Wednesday’s close, Walmart shares are up about 7% so far this year. That outpaces the roughly flat performance of the S&P 500 during the same time period. Shares of Walmart closed at $96.83 on Wednesday, bringing the company’s market value to about $775 billion.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

Rabid fox bites person in Wimberley, Hays County Sheriff’s Office reports

0

It happened near a home on Cypress Creek Lane on May 9.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — A fox in Wimberley that bit a person earlier this week has tested positive for rabies.

According to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office, the fox bit the person at around 1:30 p.m. near a home on Cypress Creek Lane on May 9. The fox was then tested by the Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and returned a positive test for the virus.

It is another incident involving rabid foxes in Hays County, along with a slew of incidents involving suspected rabid foxes that occurred on May 11 in San Marcos near the Purgatory Creek Natural Area.

Four people reported contact with a fox near the Beatrice, Dante and Ripheus trails, according to San Marcos officials. Two of those people were bitten by a fox, and all four received medical treatment.

While Purgatory Creek Natural Area remains open, San Marcos officials are asking the public to avoid those trails until their investigation is complete and the area is safe again.

Rabies is a potentially fatal virus affecting mammals, including humans, and is transmitted through saliva. Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent the virus from taking hold, as it is fatal if symptoms develop. This treatment typically involves a series of injections to build immunity.

Early symptoms can mimic the flu, including fever, headache and weakness, sometimes with discomfort at the bite site. As the disease progresses, symptoms can include anxiety, confusion, agitation, hallucinations and hydrophobia (fear of water).

Officials urge anyone who may have encountered the fox in San Marcos to contact Animal Services at 512-805-2655 for guidance on appropriate medical care.

Pet owners are reminded to vaccinate their animals against rabies, a measure required by state law and San Marcos city ordinance, to prevent the virus’ spread. Resources for low-cost pet rabies vaccinations can be found on the San Marcos city website.

Anyone who may have come in physical contact with the fox in Wimberley is encouraged to call the Hays County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control Unit at 512-393-7896 or Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control at 254-778-6744

This time, Tom Cruise’s film has received a roaring 5-minute standing ovation following the premiere at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Wednesday.

The Hollywood superstar was seen expressing his gratitude to the festival audience. “I’m very grateful to be a part of this franchise,” he said, recollecting his 30-year journey as the face of Mission: Impossible.

The actor also praised the director who has helmed four films in the franchise.

“Every step of the way, what you’ve done, how you’ve expanded it, how you just went beyond our expectations,” Tom Cruise said, calling the director “absolutely brilliant.”

“To be here in Cannes and have these moments—as a kid, I couldn’t have dreamed of something like this,” he said.

“I’m very grateful to have been able to entertain you with this franchise for 30 years.”

Tom Cruise also hinted at more collaborations to come.

Cruise last attended the festival in 2022 for the premiere of Top Gun: Maverick, which had received a six-minute standing ovation and earned him an honorary Palme d’Or. Fighter jets even lit up the sky in the colors of the French flag during that visit.

Apart from Cruise, the cast of Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning also includes Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Vanessa Kirby as Alanna Mitsopolis, Hayley Atwell as Grace, Esai Morales as the antagonist Gabriel, Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, Greg Tarzan Davis as Degas, and Pom Klementieff as the assassin Paris.

Meanwhile, the film is set to hit theaters on May 23. Indian fans will get to see it early, with a release date of May 17, a full six days before its global release.

Valve Refutes Reports About 89 Million Steam Accounts Being Hacked

In case you’ve been living under a rock, the TL;DR is that over the past couple of days, the PC gaming community has been shaken by widespread reports claiming that 89 million Steam accounts were allegedly hacked.

First reported by Underdark.ai and later amplified by Twitter user Mellow_Online1 and gaming news outlet VG247, the rumor alleged that a hacker known as Machine1337 had breached Steam and was selling a dataset of over 89 million user records for $5,000.

It was claimed that internal vendor data of affected users had been compromised, raising fears about the security of bank accounts linked to Steam. Adding to the alarm, both Mellow_Online1 and Underdark later said that the leaked sample featured real-time 2FA SMS logs routed via Twilio, including message contents, delivery status, metadata, and routing costs, further fueling the panic.

This Brewer’s Cask Single Malt Doesn’t Let Beer Overpower The Whiskey

0

Colorado-based Stranahan’s celebrated their 20th anniversary in 2024, and today, the Denver distillery is one of the oldest producers of American Single Malt. (A category of spirit that was recognized by the federal government this past January.) While the distillery is known for a wide variety of specialty releases and cask finishes, one of its latest bottles pays homage to its origins and Colorado’s storied brewing culture.

Fortunately for whiskey drinkers, this is one collaboration where the beer enhances the drinking experience instead of overpowering it.

All Stranahan’s single malt initially ages in new charred American oak barrels. After an initial aging period, often between four and six years, some of that whiskey is transferred to a variety of other casks for extended finishing. As someone who has seen their operation up close, the distillery’s deep stocks feature a dizzying array of finishing casks, including barrels that previously held a broad diversity of wines, as well as spirits including mezcal, rum, peated Scotch, and more.

To focus in on a single type of secondary barrel aging, Diamond Peak is Stranahan’s annual, nationwide bottling that highlights “one specific variety of speciality cask-finished whiskies.” The 2025 version of Diamond Peak—the fourth edition overall—is titled “Local Brewer’s Cask.”

To create the expression, Stranahan’s lent their used American single malt casks to four Denver-area breweries. Local beer was aged in those barrels, after which they were dumped and returned to Stranahan’s (or “boomeranged” according an evocatively worded press release). Those barrels were then refilled with Stranahan’s single malt, which aged for an additional period of between one and one-and-a-half years, depending on the barrel.

The liquid in those final barrels was blended to create this year’s Diamond Peak release. Previous versions of Diamond Peak featured whiskey that underwent additional aging in casks that once held Bushmills, extra añejo tequila, and Caribbean rum. (Bushmills and Stranahan’s are both owned by Proximo Spirits.)

But this latest, beer-influenced Diamond Peak gets extra points due to the nostalgia factor. In fact, the first version of what would become Stranahan’s single malt was distilled from beer mash made by Colorado’s Flying Dog Brewery. Stranahan’s has long maintained relationships and collaborated with local breweries on a variety of projects.

But the proof is ultimately in the taste. So how does this latest Diamond Peak stack up?

The nose starts off with some classic scents familiar to longtime Stranahan’s drinkers: dried orange peel, candied ginger, rum raisin ice cream, fresh drip coffee, and heavily spiced fruitcake. At least based on aroma, it’s a little funkier and more intensely spiced than some other recent expressions from the distillery—but it’s certainly not overpoweringly hoppy or otherwise tilted more toward beer than the base whiskey. (A trough some beer barrel-finished American whiskeys can easily fall into, for better or for worse.)

The palate leads with some light tropical fruit—fresh pineapple, ripe papaya—with some tannins in the realm of cigar box and fermented tea leaves. Birch and cedar build mildly at the midpalate, along with mulberries and a touch of hard apple cider. The flavor is quite pronounced for 90 proof (frankly a bit more than I was expecting), which leads to a balanced finish that once again leans into a variety of fruits with enough oak to cut through the sweetness.

This latest iteration of Stranahan’s Diamond Peak is now available at the distillery for $79.99 and at select retailers (where prices may vary).

Minnesota wildfires rage, destroying more than 140 buildings and impacting air quality

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. – Relentless wildfires have continued to rapidly grow across parts of northeastern Minnesota north of Lake Superior, destroying at least 146 homes and buildings, after days of unseasonably high temperatures and low humidity.

A trio of fires burning in St. Louis and Lake counties have scorched tens of thousands of acres, and evacuations remain in effect.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz activated the state’s National Guard on Monday to help with fire suppression.

Air quality alert issued due to wildfires

The Jenkins Creek fire has now engulfed more than 20,500 acres and remains uncontained, according to Minnesota Incident Command System (MNICS). The fire had consumed an undetermined number of buildings as of Wednesday afternoon. The St. Louis County Sheriff said in a social media post that the fire was too active to determine an accurate number.

The Camp House Fire, also known as the Brimson Fire, jumped to nearly 15,000 acres, MNICS reported. Local officials said that the fire has consumed 146 buildings and counting, mostly along Highway 44, which has been shut down in some places. That fire remains uncontained as well.

A third fire in the area, the Munger Shaw Fire, also called the Three Lakes Fire, has burned 1,700 acres, according to MNICS.  Buildings have also been destroyed in the Munger Shaw Fire, but the sheriff said the number is undetermined.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency extended an Air Quality Alert for most of northeastern Minnesota through Wednesday.

Severe weather set to blow through Minnesota Thursday

It will be a busy several days for western Minnesota and the northern Plains as wildfire relief will eventually come in the form of severe weather and a flash flood threat.

According to the FOX Forecast Center, a strong upper-level disturbance emerging from the West will set the stage for a severe weather event across parts of Minnesota from late Thursday into Thursday night.

The most meaningful rain will be to the west of the areas currently battling wildfires, but showers and thunderstorms will still bring some overall relief to the region.  A strong severe weather threat looms for central and southern Minnesota on Thursday with NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center issuing Level 2 and 3 risks across the heart of the state, with dangers for strong tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind.

The backside of the cold front that will bring severe storms will also provide much-needed rain to areas being scorched by wildfires.

A prolonged period of moderate rain is expected, but a corridor of heavier rain is expected to shift into eastern North Dakota and northern Minnesota by Thursday.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 out of 4 flash flood threat covering Wednesday and Thursday for parts of North and South Dakota.
