‘Not just a building’: BJP in Agartala protests attacks on Tagore’s ancestral home, minorities in Bangladesh; Centre urged to take note | India News

'Not just a building': BJP in Agartala protests attacks on Tagore's ancestral home, minorities in Bangladesh; Centre urged to take note

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Sadar Urban Committee on Saturday staged a protest rally in Agartala, condemning recent acts of violence against minority communities in Bangladesh and the reported attack on Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home. The rally, which supposed to be held on June 12, was postponed earlier out of respect for the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash. It began at Fire Service Choumuhani and ended at Border Golchakkar, drawing participation from several senior BJP leaders including Agartala municipal corporation mayor Dipak Majumder, senior leader and MLA Bhagaban Das, and other local members of the party. Addressing the crowd, MLA Bhagaban Das criticised what he described as “barbaric acts” being carried out in Bangladesh under its interim government, allegedly backed by Yunus. He also accused political opponents of maintaining a selective silence, “Neither the Communists nor the Congress have spoken up. They remain silent on Pakistan, on West Bengal, and now on the situation in Bangladesh. But we will not be silent,” he told ANI. The alleged attack on Tagore’s ancestral home struck a particularly emotional chord. “This house is not just a building for us; it is a matter of deep emotional connection,” said Das. “The attackers didn’t just target the house itself–they hurt us, the Indian people. That is why we are protesting today.” He added that the rally marks the beginning of a broader campaign. “In the coming days, there will be protests in every locality, and on the 16th, we will hold a larger movement in front of the Bangladesh Visa Office in Agartala.”BJP leaders urged the central government to intervene diplomatically to ensure the protection of minorities in Bangladesh and the safeguarding of cultural heritage sites. “Minorities in Bangladesh are repeatedly subjected to brutal attacks, and we, the BJP of Tripura, have consistently protested against this. However, this time, the attackers have targeted something much more significant–Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral home in Bangladesh, a place of pride for our country and the heart of every Bengali,” Das said.
