Monsoon fly control: 10 natural ways to banish fruit flies, drain flies and gnats from your home

Monsoon fly control is a must-do if you don’t want your kitchen and bathroom turning into a breeding party for bugs. As soon as the rain hits, these pests start showing up, fruit flies buzzing over bananas, drain flies lurking near sinks, fungus gnats swarming around your plants. Gross, right? The good news: you don’t need toxic sprays to deal with them. You just need a little consistency and some smart natural fly repellent hacks that work in Indian homes.

    What are monsoon flies?

Monsoon flies and their common types

Monsoon flies is a broad term for tiny flying insects that thrive in damp, humid environments during the rainy season. They aren’t one single species, but a mix of small pests commonly seen indoors once the rains begin.

    Common types of monsoon flies:

    Common types of monsoon flies:

    • Fruit flies – Attracted to ripe or decaying fruits and sweet stuff.
    • Drain flies – Breed in stagnant water and slimy drains.
    • Fungus gnats – Found in overwatered indoor plants and moist soil.
    • Midges and houseflies – Hover near garbage, compost, and open food.

While they may seem harmless, these insects can carry bacteria, contaminate food, and trigger allergies, especially in kids and seniors.

10 natural remedies for monsoon fly control

10 natural remedies for monsoon fly control

    Apple cider vinegar trap

Fill a bowl with apple cider vinegar + a drop of dish soap. Cover with plastic wrap and poke holes. Flies enter, can’t escape, and drown. Keep near fruit or dustbins.

Baking soda + vinegar for drains

Pour half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of vinegar into drains. Let it fizz, then pour hot water. Removes larvae and slime where drain flies breed.

    Neem + cinnamon for plants

Let your houseplant soil dry between watering. Sprinkle cinnamon powder or spray diluted neem oil on the topsoil to kill gnat larvae naturally.

    Lemon and clove spray

Boil lemon peels, cool the water, and add a few drops of clove or eucalyptus oil. Spray near sinks, food counters, and garbage bins. Smells great to you, horrible to flies.

    Camphor smoke

Burn camphor in a diya to release fumes that naturally repel midges, gnats, and flies. Safe to use in bedrooms and kitchens alike.

    Mint and tulsi spray

Steep fresh mint and basil (tulsi) leaves in hot water, cool it, strain, and store in a spray bottle. Mist around bins, counters, and windows. Zero chemicals, full effect.

    Essential oil diffuser

Use peppermint, lavender, or eucalyptus oil in a diffuser. These strong-smelling oils mess with a fly’s sense of direction. Bonus: your home smells spa-level fresh.

Seal gaps and switch to yellow lights

Install mesh screens, seal cracks near doors, and use yellow light bulbs, flies are less attracted to them. Block their entry before they move in.

    Eliminate standing water

Empty flowerpot trays, AC pans, and unused buckets daily. Flies breed in still water in just 48 hours.

    DIY fly repellent spray

Mix 1 cup water, ½ cup vinegar, 10 drops peppermint oil, 1 tsp dish soap. Shake and spray daily around bins, drains, and window ledges.
