It wasn’t his parents who named him — the honour goes to his maternal uncle, Gopinathan Nair.As reported by On Manorama, at a time when the family was leaning toward naming the baby Roshan Lal, it was Nair who suggested “Mohanlal”, believing it had a charm and uniqueness that would stand the test of time. His instinct proved prophetic. Mohanlal would later say that the name never gave him trouble — even when it stood out for being uncommon.A life rooted in simplicity and serviceGopinathan Nair led a life of deep commitment and humility. He served as the general manager of the Alappuzha District Cooperative Bank and later chose a spiritually fulfilling path by becoming a full-time resident of Mata Amritanandamayi’s ashram in Amritapuri. For the past 14 years, he lived there in devotion and service. It was also Nair who introduced Mohanlal to Mata Amritanandamayi, a connection the actor has held close over the years.

A quiet goodbye with a lasting legacyReportedly, at 93, Nair passed away peacefully at the ashram on June 9, surrounded by the silence he cherished. His funeral took place in Amma’s presence, along with dignitaries including actor Suresh Gopi. Despite shunning the spotlight, his legacy is larger than life: he named the man who would become international screen royalty. He also named Mohanlal’s late brother Pyarelal, reflecting the family’s decision to move away from caste-linked surnames.Mohanlal’s work frontOn the professional front, Mohanlal’s all-time blockbuster film ‘Chotta Mumbai’ was re-released recently and is getting rave reviews from the audience.
