Israel-Iran flare-up: India says 'deeply concerned'; urges restraint

NEW DELHI: The ministry of external affairs has issued a statement expressing deep concern over the mounting tensions between Israel and Iran, following Israel’s recent attack on Tehran.India has called for restraint from both nations, emphasising the importance of diplomatic channels to resolve underlying issues.“We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel. We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites. India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues,” ministry of external affairs said in a statement.“India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support. Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories,” it added. The conflict intensified early Friday when Israel conducted strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities in Tehran. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei responded with promises of “severe punishment,” while state media IRNA confirmed casualties among military officials and scientists. This escalation comes at a critical time, as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently censured Iran for the first time in two decades over its lack of cooperation with inspectors. In response, Iran announced plans to establish a third enrichment site and upgrade its centrifuge technology. The situation is particularly delicate as it precedes planned talks between Iran and the United States in Oman, where discussions about Tehran’s nuclear program were scheduled. While Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful, Israel has consistently opposed Iran’s nuclear development, vowing to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons. The US administration had been working toward a diplomatic solution, seeking an agreement that would halt Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
