Israel Claims Top Hamas Leader Mohammed Sinwar Killed in Gaza Airstrike
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Mohammed Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader in Gaza, has been killed by Israeli forces. Sinwar, one of Israel’s most wanted men and the brother of slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, was reportedly targeted in a major Israeli airstrike earlier this month.
According to Israeli officials, the strike took place on May 13 in the courtyard and surrounding area of the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza. The Israeli military stated the operation successfully destroyed Hamas’s underground infrastructure, where Mohammed Sinwar was believed to be hiding.
The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reported that 28 people were killed in the strike. However, Hamas has not officially confirmed nor denied Mohammed Sinwar’s death.
Mohammed Sinwar’s brother, Yahya Sinwar – regarded as the mastermind of the deadly October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel – was killed by Israeli forces in October 2024.
The ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict escalated following Hamas’s cross-border attack, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the capture of 251 hostages. Since then, Israel has conducted a sustained military campaign in Gaza, which, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, has led to over 54,000 deaths in the territory.
