Intense heat and humidity will continue to build in through the weekend with highs in the mid to upper 90s and heat index readings of 100 to 108 degrees each afternoon through at least Monday. Gusty winds up to 35 or 40mph at times will accompany the hot weather through Sunday.Interactive Radar | Weather AlertsMorning temperatures only cooled into the upper 70s and low 80s, with Des Moines waking up to 80 degrees and a heat index of 84 at sunrise. That’s incredibly warm for that time of day, a good indication where things are headed for the afternoon. A few morning clouds should fade away leaving mainly sunny and hot conditions for the rest of the day. Temperatures will warm into the mid-80s by 10am, touching 90 by the lunch hour. Afternoon highs should reach the mid-90s for central Iowa, around 95 or 96 for Des Moines. Combined with the high humidity, you can expect the heat index, or feels like temperature, to top out between 105 and 108 degrees during the late afternoon and early evening.Temperatures will not cool much overnight, with lows once again in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees by early Sunday. That means little time to recover from the excessive heat for anyone spending a prolonged period of time outdoors.Sunny, hot, and windy conditions return on Sunday. Temperatures will quickly warm back into the mid-90s, with heat index readings around 105 Sunday afternoon. Wind gusts will once again be in the 35 to 40mph range, especially in the afternoon.By Monday, a stormier weather pattern will start to set up. Before that happens, one last day of intense heat is expected with highs in the low to mid-90s on Monday, though northern Iowa could be cooler as storms start to move into the area.A round of storms is likely Monday evening into Tuesday morning, helping to bring temperatures back down into the 80s on Tuesday. Storms likely shift to the north through the day on Tuesday, but another round is possible Tuesday night into Wednesday. We’ll see daily rain and storm chances continue through the rest of the week, with the daytime hours more likely to be dry, and storms increasing during the evening into the early mornings. Friday appears to have the best shot at staying dry through most of the day. Even with the slightly cooler conditions, the high humidity will not be going anywhere so it will still feel quite sticky through the week. Storm chances will likely linger into the upcoming weekend.Des Moines forecastToday: Sunny, hot, and windy. High 96F. Winds SSW at 25 to 35 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph.
