As India prepare to face England in the second Test of the five-match series at Edgbaston, history offers a reminder of the challenge that awaits. In eight Test matches played between the two sides at the venue from 1967 to 2022, England have dominated comprehensively, winning seven encounters and drawing one. India have never beaten England at Edgbaston in a Test match. Across these eight games, England boast an imposing average of 45.36 runs per wicket at a scoring rate of 3.47 runs per over. Their highest team total in these contests is a massive 710, while the lowest stands at 180. The win-loss ratio is technically undefined, as India have never registered a win at this ground against the hosts.

    • Lost: 7
    • Tied: 0
    • Drawn: 1
    • Win/Loss Ratio: 0.000

    • Run Rate (RPO): 3.06
    • Innings Played: 16
    • Highest Score: 416
    • Lowest Score: 92

The venue has traditionally favoured seam and swing, especially under overcast skies—conditions that have often exposed India’s batting vulnerabilities in the past. With pace expected to play a major role again this week, Edgbaston poses a significant test for India’s top order. Adding to the pressure is the outcome of the series opener at Headingley. England took a 1-0 lead with a clinical performance, chasing down a competitive fourth-innings target with five wickets in hand. Ben Duckett anchored the chase with a composed 149, while Jamie Smith impressed with a strong finish. India, despite flashes of promise and five individual centuries, were left to rue another batting collapse that allowed England to seize control.

    Poll

Who do you think will score the most runs for India in this Test?

As the series shifts to Birmingham, India will need to overcome both current form and historical precedent to level the score.
