NEW DELHI: India captain Shubman Gill has climbed to a career-best sixth position in the ICC Men’s Test Batting Rankings, while England’s Harry Brook has overtaken teammate Joe Root to become the top-ranked batter in the longest format.Gill’s remarkable performances — scoring 269 and 161 — made him only the second player in Test history to record 150-plus scores in both innings of a match. His aggregate of 430 runs is now the second-highest in a single Test. These exploits have propelled him 15 places up the rankings, having started the series at No. 23. His previous best was 14th, achieved in September last year.

‘Any attack of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere’: Shubman Gill hails Mohd Siraj, Akash Deep after historic Edgbaston win

Meanwhile, Brook has returned to the summit of Test batting following his stellar 158 in the first innings of the second Test at Edgbaston. He had previously held the No.1 spot for a week in December 2024. His latest rise sees Joe Root drop to second, along with an 18-point rating decrease.
