Even as India wobbled at Lord’s on a tense Day 4, Shubman Gill quietly etched his name into the history books. With just 6 runs in the second innings, the Indian captain surpassed Rahul Dravid’s 23-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test series in England. Gill now has 607 runs in the 2025 series, overtaking Dravid’s 602 from the legendary 2002 tour. It’s a staggering achievement for the 24-year-old, who has led from the front in both temperament and technique across challenging English conditions. The moment came amid high tension, as India chased 193 for victory but were reeling at 58 for 4 by stumps. Gill walked in with the series on the line but could not weather the storm for long. He was trapped lbw by Brydon Carse for just 6 runs, yet even in that short stay, he edged past a historic landmark.

    Poll

How would you rate India’s chances of winning the Lord’s Test?

The top run-getters for India in a Test series in England now read: 607* – Shubman Gill (2025) 602 – Rahul Dravid (2002) 593 – Virat Kohli (2018) 542 – Sunil Gavaskar (1979)461 – Rahul Dravid (2011) Gill’s tally speaks volumes of his hunger and maturity. This is his breakout summer, one that will be remembered not just for his elegant strokeplay but for carrying the hopes of a team fighting through the toughest of contests. Whether India go on to win or lose the Lord’s Test, Shubman’s series will go down as one of the greats.
