Hulu and Crunchyroll apps won’t work on Switch 2, among other video apps – Nintendo Wire

As we’re getting closer and closer to the release of the Switch 2, Nintendo has been updating its backward compatibility list on its website to help keep buyers informed about which pieces of software will function on the new console. So far, almost the entire original library of Switch 1 games will function as normal, though something like 5% of them have issues. Those issues range from things like “requires the IR camera not on Joy-Con 2,” to “doesn’t fit the VR headset thing from LABO.” While it’s easy to understand why that is the case, it’s surprising to learn that Hulu and Crunchyroll won’t function on the Switch 2, among a few other video apps.

In the (admittedly very small) list of titles that simply will not function on Nintendo Switch 2 at all, Hulu and Crunchyroll are mentioned alongside: VR Kit, Niconico (a Japanese video sharing site similar to YouTube), ABEMA (a Japanese streaming service), and InkyPen (an app for reading comics). While details aren’t given for why these apps aren’t compatible, I would have to guess it came down to either licensing agreements or the Switch 2’s unique architecture. Since even Switch 1 games aren’t running natively on the console, these companies likely would have to develop brand new versions of their apps, and that might not be worth it from a monetary standpoint. Nintendo might also have to re-license the Switch 2 for the apps, even if they are backward compatible, and that becomes a headache when attempting to solve problems.

While some people are upset at the fact that the Switch never received native apps for things like Netflix, Disney+, or HBO Max, Nintendo has never focused on any kind of multimedia experience with the Switch. The console was designed for games, and Nintendo has kept it primarily about that. With the Switch 2, it seems the company is drifting even more towards games, so it’s unlikely new versions of Hulu or Crunchyroll will wind up on the platform. With nearly everyone having a SmartTV or smartphone in 2025, it’s not even really a big issue anymore. Either way, it would be nice to know why these apps aren’t supported on the new console.

    More Switch 2

PowerA will soon be taking pre-orders for wired Switch 2 gamepads with Hall Effect joysticks

Switch 2’s GameChat will require a phone number for registration before use

Recordings on the Switch 2 seem to still be restricted to 30 seconds
