How to get rid of ‘deemak’ from wooden furniture: Easy and affordable remedies that work for termites

Termites are often referred to as “silent destroyers” due to their ability to cause significant damage to wooden structures without immediate signs. Wooden furniture, being a prime target, can suffer from infestations that compromise their integrity and aesthetic appeal. While professional pest control services are available, they can be costly. There are several affordable and natural remedies that homeowners can employ to combat termite infestations effectively. These natural solutions not only help eliminate termites but also reduce the risk of toxic exposure to pets and family members. With regular use and prevention, you can protect your furniture without breaking the bank.

Natural and affordable remedies to remove termites from wooden furniture

Sunlight exposureTermites thrive in dark, moist environments. Exposing infested furniture to direct sunlight for 2–3 days can effectively kill termites and dry out the wood, making it less hospitable for future infestations.Neem oil applicationNeem oil disrupts the feeding and reproductive cycles of termites. Applying diluted neem oil to affected areas can deter termites and prevent further damage.Orange oil treatmentExtracted from orange peels, orange oil contains d-limonene, which dissolves termites’ exoskeletons, leading to dehydration and death. Drilling small holes into the infested wood and injecting the oil can target termites directly.Boric acid solutionBoric acid is a non-toxic pesticide that interferes with termites’ digestive systems. Mixing boric acid with water and spraying it on infested areas can help eliminate termites over time.Cardboard trapsTermites are attracted to cellulose. Placing moistened cardboard near infested furniture can lure termites out. Once they infest the cardboard, it can be disposed of, removing a portion of the colony.Aloe vera gel barrierApplying a thick layer of aloe vera gel on the surface of wooden furniture creates a barrier that termites find difficult to penetrate. This method is particularly useful for preventing new infestations.Salt injectionFor localised infestations, injecting a mixture of salt and warm water into the holes can dehydrate and kill termites. This method is effective for small-scale problems.

Preventive measures to protect wooden furniture

    • Regular inspections: Periodically check wooden furniture for signs of termite activity.
    • Maintain dry conditions: Ensure that furniture is kept in dry areas, as moisture attracts termites.
    • Use termite-resistant polishes: Apply polishes that contain termite-repelling ingredients to create a protective layer.
    • Seal cracks and crevices: Prevent termites from entering by sealing any gaps in walls or floors near wooden furniture.
