NEW DELHI: Shubman Gill etched his name into Indian cricketing history on Sunday, becoming the youngest Indian captain to win a Test match overseas, leading his team to a record-breaking 336-run win against England in the second Test at Edgbaston. At 25 years and 301 days, Gill surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s long-standing record set in 1976 in Auckland. Gavaskar was 26 years and 202 days old when his side beat New Zealand almost half a century ago.Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. It surpassed the previous away record set in 2019, when India defeated West Indies by 318 runs at North Sound.

Do you think Shubman Gill’s captaincy marks a new era in Indian Test cricket?

Gill’s performance with the bat was nothing short of historic. He became the first batter in Test history to score 250 and 150 in the same match, compiling majestic innings of 269 and 161. This came on the back of his 147 in the first Test at Headingley, where India lost despite his century. With 585 runs at an average of 146.25 in just two Tests, Gill is now chasing Don Bradman’s legendary record of 974 runs in a series – a mark that has stood for 90 years.

Speaking after the win, a composed yet proud Gill said, “Especially when you are the captain, I think you need to lead by example… so whenever there is another player in that situation, you can tell that player, this is what the team requires right now.”He added, “If a good ball gets me out, it gets me out. But as long as I am there, I want to play as long as possible.”Pace duo Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep played key roles in England’s collapse, while Gill’s leadership – under the added weight of succeeding Rohit Sharma and filling Virat Kohli’s No. 4 slot – signaled a new era in Indian Test cricket. The third Test begins July 10 at Lord’s, where Gill’s India will now look to turn the tide further in their favour.
