The debate over player workload is back in focus after England captain Ben Stokes sent down more than 100 overs in the ongoing Test series against India. His long spells, despite his history with knee injuries, have won praise and also sparked questions about how India handles its pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. So, are India’s bowlers really carrying too much load? Let’s look at the numbers. In three matches so far, Stokes has bowled 105 overs and taken 11 wickets. He has done this while batting, fielding and leading the side. For comparison, Bumrah has bowled about 87 overs in just two Tests. He has 12 wickets, with an economy rate under three runs per over, which is the best among pacers this series.

    Ben Stokes (ENG) 105 630 324 11 5/111 57.2
    Ravindra Jadeja (IND) 99 594 331 3 1/49 198
    Jasprit Bumrah (IND) 86.4 520 252 12 7/112 43.3
    Josh Tongue (ENG) 81 486 370 11 7/158 44.1

    Shardul Thakur (IND) 16 96 89 2 2/89 48
    Harry Brook (ENG) 5 30 31 0 – –

Mohammed Siraj has bowled 109 overs across three matches and picked up 13 wickets. Akash Deep, who came in for the second and third Tests, has already bowled 72 overs. The contrast is clear. Stokes has bowled longer spells and takes on extra responsibility when his team needs him, even though he is not a specialist bowler. Bumrah, meanwhile, plays in carefully managed spells. The plan was already set before the series that Bumrah will only play three out of the five Tests in order to protect his body for future matches.

    Poll

Do you believe that India’s management of Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling workload is justified?

Critics like Irfan Pathan feel India might be holding Bumrah back too much. He pointed out that when Joe Root was batting on Day 5 at Lord’s, Bumrah bowled only five overs in that crucial phase. England turned the match from there.India’s coaching staff defends the plan. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate explained that Bumrah is most effective in short bursts and that other bowlers build into longer spells. It is all about getting the best out of everyone. But the raw numbers show that India’s main bowlers are not bowling drastically more than England’s. In fact, Bumrah has bowled fewer overs than Siraj or Stokes but remains India’s best wicket-taker. The difference is Stokes pushing through pain and risk for his team’s needs, while India stick to pre-decided limits to keep Bumrah fresh. As the series heads to a must-win Test in Manchester, this debate will grow louder. If India need one big spell to win, will Bumrah be out there doing what Stokes does for England? Or will workload plans keep him watching from the sidelines?
