    Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe shot during campaign stop; attacker arrested

    Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe shot during campaign stop; attacker arrested

    Colombian presidential candidate Miguel Uribe was shot Saturday during a campaign event in the Fontibon district of Bogota, according to the Colombian national police.Paramedics informed Uribe was shot three times, twice in the head.The attack occurred in a park in the city’s Fontibon neighborhood when assailants opened fire from behind. Images shared on social media showed Uribe Turbay bleeding from the head as bystanders rushed to help him. Bogota mayor Carlos Galan confirmed that Uribe was receiving emergency medical care and said the city’s entire hospital network was on alert in case a transfer was needed.Bogota Mayor Carlos Galán said a suspected shooter had been captured. Colombian police chief Gen Carlos Triana confirmed that a minor allegedly involved in the attack was apprehended at the scene and is being treated for a leg injury. A firearm was recovered.At the time of the shooting, Uribe Turbay was accompanied by councilman Andres Barrios and about 20 others, authorities said.Colombian president Gustavo Petro expressed solidarity on social media, posting, “Respect life, that’s the red line.” In a message posted on X, Petro expressed his support Uribe’s family, “I don’t know how to ease your pain. It is the pain of a mother lost, and of a wounded homeland.”
