Coffee, Cheese, and More Pulled From Shelves

Last week, there were four major food recalls, all affecting well-known brands.

Dollar General recalled instant coffee that may contain glass. Friendly’s ice cream was pulled from shelves over a potentially dangerous labeling mix-up, and several cheese products from Wegmans were impacted due to bacterial contamination. Frozen raw shrimp from Walmart was also affected—it may contain radioactive materials.

Here’s what you need to return or throw away.

Instant coffee from Dollar General was recalled in 48 states, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Aug. 12.

The coffee may contain glass, which poses a risk of serious injury. Ingesting glass can damage teeth, lacerate the mouth and throat, and perforate the intestine.

If you have the recalled coffee, throw it away and contact Dollar General for a full refund.

A customer notified Dollar General employees of the glass contamination.

    Product Details

    • Product name: Clover Valley Instant Coffee
    • Size: 8 ounces (oz.)
    • UPC: 876941004069
    • Lot 1: L-5163 with best-by date 12/13/2026

    • Lot 3: L-5165 with best-by date 12/14/2026

    Affected States

The recalled coffee was sold at Dollar General locations in every state except:

Over 300 cartons of Friendly’s ice cream were recalled on Aug. 6 due to a labeling error.

The brand’s Cookies and Cream flavor was accidentally packaged in Vanilla Bean containers, and the incorrect cartons do not list the soy and wheat allergens in the ice cream.

People with these allergies run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they eat the recalled ice cream. If you can consume soy and wheat, the product is otherwise safe.

The lid is correct, the carton is labeled with the wrong flavor (and has missing allergen warnings).

On Aug. 12, Wegmans recalled several soft cheese products sold in stores across nine states and Washington, D.C.

The recalled cheese may contain Listeria, bacteria that can cause serious or potentially life-threatening foodborne illness.

If you recently purchased cheese from Wegmans, check if the product is included in the recall. If it is, throw it away immediately and monitor for symptoms of a Listeria infection, which can include diarrhea, stomach pain, and fever.

The recalled cheese was initially imported from France.

On Tuesday, the FDA recommended a recall of raw frozen shrimp sold at Walmart stores nationwide. The shrimp may be contaminated with cesium-137 (Cs-137), a radioactive byproduct of nuclear reactions that’s sometimes found in the soil, water, or air.

While the affected shrimp has not tested positive for Cs-137 at this time, another shrimp product from the same processor, PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, did contain Cs-137. Even at low levels, the radioactive isotope can increase cancer risk if there’s long term exposure.

Check your freezer for the affected shrimp, and throw it away immediately.
