Many children have the habit of dozing off while studying, even after a full night of quality sleep! The reasons behind it could be varied, including prolonged concentration, boredom or even daydreaming! However, when children have a big exam ahead, and have already got their share of sleep, then it is important for them to focus on studying, and as parents, here are a couple of things you can do to make sure your child is not dozing off while studying.

    2

Short, active breaksSitting for long hours can make kids feel sleepy. Encourage them to take short breaks every hour to move around. Activities like stretching, jumping jacks, or a quick walk help increase blood flow and send oxygen to the brain. This refreshes both the body and mind, making it easier to stay awake and focused when they return to studying.Create a comfortably “uncomfortable” environmentBright light helps the brain stay alert. Studying in a dark or dim room can make kids feel sleepy. Make sure the study space has plenty of natural or artificial light. A well-lit room sends signals to the brain that it’s time to be awake and attentive. This apart, make sure they don’t study on the bed or sofa, and only on a study table, where they have to sit upright, and not slouch.Hydration is keyDehydration can cause tiredness and make it hard to concentrate. Kids should keep a water bottle nearby and drink water regularly during study time. Staying hydrated helps the brain work better and prevents sleepiness. No sugar/heavy mealsSugary snacks may give a quick energy boost, but often lead to a crash, making kids feel more tired. Instead, provide healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, yogurt, or whole-grain crackers. Balanced snacks with protein, complex carbs, and healthy fats keep energy steady and the mind sharp. Caffeine is usually not recommended for kids, and even it is, (in older kids) make sure they are not having it everyday.

Read aloudReading silently can sometimes make kids drowsy. Encourage them to read aloud or explain the chapter in easy words to a parent, or sibling. Writing notes or making diagrams also keeps their hands and brain active, helping them stay awake and remember better.Mix it upStudying the same subject for too long can cause boredom and tiredness. Encourage kids to switch between subjects or topics every couple of hours. This change keeps their brain engaged and reduces the chance of feeling sleepy.Get them to sleep full nightNo matter how many tricks are used, lack of proper sleep makes it hard to stay awake during the day. Kids should get 7 to 8 hours of good-quality sleep every night. A well-rested brain is more alert, focused, and ready to learn.Manage stressStress and anxiety can drain energy and make kids feel exhausted. Simple relaxation techniques like deep breathing or short meditation can help reduce stress. Encouraging positive self-talk, like “I can do this,” boosts confidence and motivation, which helps keep sleepiness away.
