BENGALURU: A businessman in Bengaluru underwent surgery after his finger was severely bitten during a road rage incident that began over rainwater splashing onto another vehicle. The incident occurred on the night of 26 May near the Railway Colony on Magadi Road. Jayant Shekhar, a resident of Magadi Road, was driving home with his wife Parvati and mother-in-law Manjula after dinner when their electric car splashed rainwater onto an adjacent vehicle while navigating a waterlogged stretch.
According to the police complaint, the driver of the adjacent car and a woman passenger yelled at Shekhar, who apologised and continued driving. However, the other vehicle overtook and blocked Shekhar’s car a short distance later. The man then allegedly forced Shekhar out of the car, began shouting at him and physically assaulted him. During the altercation, Shekhar reportedly grabbed the man’s hand in an attempt to escape, at which point the man bit Shekhar’s right ring finger and punched him below his left eye. He then fled the scene, issuing threats. “Shekhar’s finger was badly injured and doctors said surgery was necessary due to bone damage,” Parvati told TOI.She added that the treatment at a private hospital in Sheshadripuram cost Rs 2 lakh and that her husband is still in pain. Parvati also alleged that the woman accompanying the attacker behaved aggressively and threatened them. A formal police complaint was filed the following day at the Magadi Road police station. A case has been registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including voluntarily causing hurt and grievous hurt, criminal intimidation and wrongful restraint. Police say efforts are underway to identify and arrest the suspects, who were travelling in a car with registration number KA-02-MT-0512.
Recent road rage incidents in Bengaluru
This is the latest in a series of violent road rage cases in the city. In April, an Indian Air Force Wing Commander was booked for attempt to murder following a brawl with a private company employee. CCTV footage later showed the officer allegedly assaulting the man. In August 2024, a 21-year-old delivery executive named Mahesh died after being hit by a car that had allegedly chased him following a minor collision.
