Apple Reportedly Bringing ‘Metalens’ Technology To All iPhone 17 Models, Allowing It To Significantly Reduce The Face ID Sensor And Dynamic Island Size

The Dynamic Island was first introduced in 2022 and was exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, making it a step up from the notch when it came to utilizing less real estate. However, witnessing the exact ‘pill-shaped’ cutout has lost its appeal as there are little to no aesthetically discerning differences between the current-generation models and the lineup that launched before it. Fortunately, a new report states that Apple has been working on a technology called ‘metalens,’ which, when applied to the entire iPhone 17 series, will allow the Face ID sensor to be reduced in size, resulting in a smaller Dynamic Island.

The metalens addition was previously said to be exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but Apple is now reportedly making it a standard

Just like how Apple made the Dynamic Island a standard with the iPhone 15 launch, the California-based giant is bringing metalens technology to reduce the Face ID sensor’s size for the entire iPhone 17 lineup. GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu made this prediction, with his research note spotted by 9to5Mac mentioning that he has made some amends for the upcoming devices. Instead of the top-tier iPhone 17 Pro Max getting treated to metalens, all four models will share this attribute.

With this change, the entire iPhone 17 range can flaunt a smaller Dynamic Island, leading to an increase in the ‘screen to body ratio.’ Fortunately, the cutout’s functionality is not expected to change as it can resize itself depending on what the user is doing or which app has been opened at that time. Pu had previously commented that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air would ship with 8GB RAM, but his latest research note reveals that only the base model will sport the aforementioned memory count, along with the older A18 found in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.

The specifications breakdown are currently all over the place, and Pu does not have the best track record when it comes to Apple’s iPhone launches. With that being said, it is imperative that readers treat this information with a truckload of salt and we will return with more updates.
