Aditya Narayan REACTS to Udit Narayan’s kissing controversy: 'Social media is not a real place'
Udit Narayan faced backlash after kissing a fan, sparking consent debates. His son, Aditya, explained generational differences and emphasized teaching Udit about consent. Acknowledging past mistakes, Udit is now aware and willing to adapt, highlighting the importance of learning and evolving as a public figure in today’s changing times.

Earlier this year, Udit Narayan sparked controversy after kissing a female fan during a concert, kindling discussions about consent and personal boundaries for celebrities. The situation escalated when old footage of him kissing fellow singers Shreya Ghoshal and Alka Yagnik resurfaced. His son, Aditya Narayan, has since addressed the issue, assuring that Udit has acknowledged the concerns and is committed to preventing such incidents in the future.Social Media: An Incomplete PictureIn an interview with SCREEN, Aditya reflected on the recent kissing videos that surfaced online, describing the internet as unpredictable. He pointed out that social media doesn’t show the complete reality, stating, “Internet is a strange thing. Social media is not a real place and what you see on social media is not the full picture.” He also acknowledged the limited control public figures have over what gets shared publicly.Generational Differences in Understanding Fan InteractionsAditya revealed that initially, his father did not understand why people were angry. He comes from a different time and perspective, a time when fans used to throw their undergarments on the artist on stage, which is no longer acceptable. Similarly, he comes from a time when a fan gives you love, and you don’t consider it incorrect when giving that love back.Explaining the Concept of ConsentThe singer explained to his father that consent is an important concept in today’s world, something his father was previously unaware of. He pointed out that this understanding is relatively new and crucial. Aditya mentioned that if the situation had involved someone younger, like himself or a 32-year-old woman, it might not have caused such a stir. However, since Udit Narayan is now a respected senior member of the music fraternity with fans ranging from ages 6 to 60, the context has changed significantly. The appropriateness of such actions depends greatly on who is involved.Role Model Responsibilities and AwarenessHe added that his father wasn’t aware and doesn’t come from that generation. He is someone who would never want to be inappropriate. When his father doesn’t understand something, he explains it to him. Now, his father is aware that there is something called consent. He told him that as a public figure, how someone expresses their love to you will never become news, but how you express that love back is very important because you are a role model.Willingness to Evolve with Changing TimesAditya shared that Udit is willing to adapt to changing times. He praised his father’s openness to learning and understanding once it was explained to him. Aditya noted that people often don’t realize what they are saying, especially since Udit is 70 years old and from a different era. While not defending him, Aditya said everyone evolves, and this was an area where his father hadn’t yet caught up. Now that the issue has arisen, Udit is aware of it. Aditya emphasized that public figures should be allowed to make mistakes and learn from them, as nobody is perfect. He concluded by saying they are simple people who keep learning and growing.
