Abhishek Bachchan on working with Amitabh Bachchan in ‘Bunty Aur Babli’: “I kept asking Shaad how I would be able to face the camera with Paa” - Exclusive

In the world of cinema, few moments are as monumental as the on-screen collaboration between a legendary father and his talented son. We are talking about the movie ‘Bunty Aur Babli,’ which featured the legendary artist Amitabh Bachchan and the versatile star Abhishek Bachchan together very first time. It created a buzz that resonated beyond the film itself. Today, as the movie clocks 20, Abhishek, in his candid conversation with us, describes the film as simply “fun.”Elaborating on what made it so much fun, Abhishek credited the director, Shaad Ali. “When he narrated the plot, I died laughing. We seldom get to hear such devious crime capers,” said the actor. He continued, “I grabbed it with both hands. Shaad was, and remains, a dear friend. I would have done his film even if it wasn’t as funny as Bunty Aur Babli. I would work with him again anytime he asked me.”

As the conversation went ahead, he finally addressed the elephant in the room – how was it working with his father and one of Bollywood’s finest – The Amitabh Bachchan! “Bunty Aur Babli was the first time we were cast together. I will be honest. I was very nervous. I kept asking Shaad how I’d be able to face the camera with Paa. Shaad assured me it would be okay. And it was,” recounted Abhishek. The real-life son and father played the thief and cop in the movie, and according to Jr. Bachchan, it was “one of the fun elements.” “It gave the caper an extra edge. Paa made his entry midway, and what an entry! The audience just went crazy,” said Abhishek.

And then came the song-and-dance ‘Kajra Re’

“I remember you were there at Film City on the first day of the song’s shooting. It was my birthday. On top of that, there was a surprise element, the special appearance of Aishwarya Rai, which made the song and the entire sequence all the more historic. With his words, Abhishek Bachchan highlighted that the movie, even after two decades, holds a special place in his heart.
