Hilary Duff’s Summer Outfit Included a Reformation Top and Baggy Jeans

Thanks to Hilary Duff, my brain is richer by the dozen — with outfit inspiration, that is. 

On May 14, the actress skirted around in the outfit combo that never, ever fails to come together: She reached for a frilly tank top from Reformation, a brand Jessica Alba and I have in our personal collections, plus a pair of distressed baggy jeans. It was about the ten thousandth time I’ve seen someone wear the good ol’ denim-and-shirt combo, but call me impressed once again. 

She also sprinkled in some accessories, including a pair of pointed-toe shoes, a roomy bag, and a pair of oval sunglasses.

Reformation Andrea Top

The designers of Duff’s $148 top really paid attention to the details. The back has smocked features, which can stretch to fit different types of bras, and there’s ruching around the cup area should you want to go bra-free. Plus, the way the ribbon is placed makes it seem like it’s woven all the way through the shirt, which is an elegant touch that looks finely crafted. 

Gap Mid Rise UltraSoft Baggy Jeans

Jeans don’t need to be totally worn in order to count as distressed. Denim, in general, is  one of the most effective ways to make an outfit look less fussy and more lived-in. I also prefer those with rips for a breeze in the summer — and these have them just around the knees. Plus, the fit is “soft and floppy,” according to one shopper, which sounds incredibly comfortable.

Semwiss Pointed-Toe Ballet Flats

I love, love, love ballet flats with a pointed toe because they give the illusion of a fancy pair of heels. Naturally, they’re flat though, so my feet don’t blister or hurt, and they’re much quicker to slip on when I’m running out the door. I truly have enough shoes to last a lifetime, but if you have room for another pair, I’d go for these, which shoppers are picking up in droves.

Kate Spade Phoebe Commuter Tote

I’m not a commuter, but I still want the Phoebe Commuter Tote: It has top handles, but you can also carry it with a strap as a crossbody when it’s heavy with essentials like my soon-to-be-purchased sunglasses (also inspired by Duff). It seems like a steal, too, since it’s valued at $499, but costs less than half of that.
