Amal Clooney stepped out in style for a solo red carpet appearance at the Cannes Film Festival — and broke the event’s brand-new dress code rules in the process.
The wife of George Clooney hit the red carpet in France for the premiere of Bono: Stories of Surrender at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on Friday May 16, rocking a fitted black, silk gown with off the shoulder straps.
The human rights attorney and film producer, 47, wore her long brown hair down in a shiny blowout hairstyle, and she completed her look with pair of dangling diamond earrings.

Although Clooney was seemingly allowed onto the red carpet without issue, the film festival announced new, strict outfit guidelines for this year’s event that resulted in some attendees even being turned away at the entrance.
As stated on the official FAQ website for the event, “Nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival,” due to “decency reasons.” In addition to that, “voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theater are not permitted.”
Guests attending screenings from around 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Grand Théâtre Lumière — the carpeted steps of which are most known to display the most showstopping of looks — are “required” to wear eveningwear in the form of long dresses and tuxedos.

“The Festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules,” reads the website, with an added statement that “for all other screenings, proper attire is sufficient.”
The website also states alternative styles that attendees can choose to wear within the vague category. That includes “a little black dress, a cocktail dress, a dark-colored pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants; a black or navy blue suit with bow-tie or dark-colored tie.”
Additionally, footwear can be narrowed down to “elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel,” but sneakers are not allowed.

Although neither Clooney nor her husband worked on Bono: Stories of Surrender, the couple’s longtime friend and George’s frequent collaborator Brad Pitt served as a producer on the Apple TV+ documentary centered around the U2 frontman’s life.
Clooney could be seen posing with both Bono and The Edge at the star-studded premiere. Tons of other celebs were also in attendance, including Imogen Poots, model Petra Nemcova, Kim Gordon, Thora Birch and more.
According to a press release, the film will be a “bold and lyrical visual exploration of Bono’s one-man show,” and is set to release on Friday, May 30, on Apple TV+.
The 22-time Grammy winner created the show based on his successful memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story. However, the film is a reimagined version of his one-man stage show, Stories of Surrender: An Evening of Words, Music, and Some Mischief, which was based on his book.
The upcoming production provides a glimpse into the, from his “family, friends, and faith that have challenged and sustained him.”
