5 reasons to chew betel leaf post meal



As per Ayurveda, it is a tridoshic herb, meaning it helps balance Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Chewing betel leaf after meals is recommended to stimulate Agni (digestive fire), enhance metabolism, and promote the elimination of toxins. Its carminative and antiseptic properties aid in digestion, freshen the breath, and even support oral health by reducing harmful microbes. As per a study by the National Library of Medicine, in India, Betel leaf (BL) has played an important role since ancient culture. Its use in India dates back to 400 BC. As per ancient books of Ayurveda, Charaka, Sushruta Samhitas, and Kashyapa Bhojanakalpa, the practice of chewing BL after meals became common between 75 AD and 300 AD.
